Americans responded to the September 11 terrorist strikes on New York and Washington, D.C., with a mix of anger toward the terrorists, generosity and empathy for the victims, and bewilderment at the intentions of people who would kill themselves and thousands of others.

Policymakers face daunting tasks in waging war against shadowy terrorists and preventing further attacks, and they also must navigate the U.S. public reaction. A majority of Americans support military action, but they puzzle over the motives of terrorism and wonder why the U.S. is hated by so many people abroad.

This Web site provides material from a variety of CQ Press sources relevant to the issues. Sources include encyclopedia articles on the political and religious history of Afghanistan, on the Clinton administration's strikes on Usama bin Laden and on concepts such as War and Religion and Jihad; three issues of The CQ Researcher offering in-depth studies on Combating Terrorism, Islamic Fundamentalism and the Middle East Conflict; and more.
