The Russian and East European Network Information Center (REENIC), maintained by the University of Texas at Austin, is one of the most comprehensive academic Web portals for area studies. Each region and country can be researched by following links organized by subject.

 

Country Studies

The Country Studies Series of the U.S. Library of Congress provides description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world. The database is searchable by country name. The “Portals to the World” link provides Internet links arranged by subject for every country.

 

REES Web: World Wide Web Virtual Library for Russian and East European Studies

The REES Web site, maintained by the University of Pittsburgh, provides a list of annotated Web links for the region, with searches possible by geography, subject key word, culture, or time period. The “Announcements and Events” link provides updates on important events in the region.

 

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace: Moscow Center

The Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace established the Carnegie Moscow Center in 1993. The center accommodates foreign and Russian researchers collaborating with Washington staff on a variety of topical areas and policy-relevant projects. The Web site provides access to the center’s program activities and a variety of useful documents, including policy briefs, journals, and newsletters.

 

Balkan Investigative Reporting Network

BIRN’s Web site provides access to reporting on the key issues related to the region’s development. The network’s investigative reports, newsletter, and roundtable debates cover issues ranging from the rule of law and good governance to European integration, organized crime, human rights, ethnic minorities, and other issues vital to reconciliation and civil society.
