This web site provides a budget glossary, links to budget data and summarized the challenges that researchers who are interested in studying the budget across time and space incur. Beyond the American context, this Web site also includes information and paper on the budgeting processes in other countries.

 

The “Troika”--Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) , Office of Management and Budget (OMB) , and the Department of the Treasury .

 

OMB Watch is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting government accountability, citizen participation in public policy decisions, and the use of fiscal and regulatory policy to serve the public interest. Their work focuses on the following four areas: budget, taxation and government performance; information and access; nonprofit action, advocacy rights and policy; and regulatory policy.

 

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. The GAO gathers information to help Congress determine whether government programs are meeting their objectives and, thus, helps hold the government accountable to the American people. To that end, GAO provides Senators and Representatives with the best information available to help them arrive at informed policy decisions. The GAO supports congressional oversight by evaluating how well government policies and programs are working; auditing agency operations to determine whether federal funds are being spent efficiently, effectively, and appropriately; investigating allegations of illegal and improper activities; and issuing legal decisions and opinions, among other functions.

The National Center for Policy Analysis provides federal spending-specific information by subfield (e.g., agriculture, commerce, defense, national parks, etc.) related to the balanced budget amendment; balanced budget planning; budget process reform; federal deficit; federal spending; national debt; and spending programs.

 

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities focuses on fiscal policy and public programs at the federal and state levels that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals. The Center conducts research and analysis to inform public debates over proposed budget and tax policies and to help ensure that the needs of low-income families and individuals are considered in these debates. The research areas of the Center include federal budget and tax programs; state budget and tax programs; earned income tax credit; health policies; program simplification; and Social Security; among others. This website also provides an overview and slideshow related to post-Hurricane Katrina federal budget priorities and analysis.

 

The American Association for Budget and Program Analysis is a membership organization dedicated to the helping federal, state and local government managers and analysts, among others, meet the challenges of budget and program assessment.
