Terrorism: A Documentary History

Please find below some important information regarding a newspaper article by USA Today reporter Jack Kelley that appears on pages 346-350 of Terrorism: A Documentary History. An investigation conducted by USA Today recently found that many eyewitness details contained in Kelley’s article were demonstrably false.

Terrorism: A Documentary History collects one hundred primary source documents that illustrate the history of terrorism from 1972 to the present. Each document begins with a headnote that provides original analysis of the document and explains its relevance to the subject. Veteran CQ Press author Bruce Maxwell chose documents that effectively demonstrate what terrorism is, how it has been used, why groups engage in it, and the methods used to defeat it. He selected Jack Kelley’s August 2001 story for its incredibly vivid account of a scene immediately following a terrorist attack in Jerusalem. The article helped Kelley earn honors as a Pulitzer Prize finalist, but unfortunately, USA Today’s March 2004 investigation determined that some of the details included in Kelley’s article were fictitious.

For further details on the investigation into Kelley’s original story, please see USA Today’s March 19, 2004, article at http://www.usatoday.com/news/2004-03-19-jerusalem_x.htm.
