Arizona’s presidential primary Feb. 5 could be a barometer
of several things: the level of John McCain’s popularity
within his home state GOP, the strength of the Hispanic vote,
and the power of the controversial immigration issue.
Both major parties in Arizona limit participation in their primaries
to voters registered in their party. As of July 2007, there were
2,649,367 registered voters in Arizona--1,023,508 Republicans,
873,301 Democrats, and 752,558 independent and third-party voters.
