Committees in the U.S. Congress 1993-2010
Garrison Nelson, University of Vermont
Charles Stewart III, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Committees in the U.S. Congress 1993–2010 chronicles the history of the committee system and membership in both chambers of the U.S. Congress. Updated through the first session of the 111th Congress, scholars Garrison Nelson and Charles Stewart III trace House and Senate standing, select, special, and joint committees, their histories, jurisdictions, and subcommittees. In addition they provide House and Senate committee rosters and member committee assignments over the 1993–2010 period, an era where changes in the partisan control of each chamber led to upheaval in the committee system.

Committees in the U.S. Congress 1993–2010 is divided into three major sections. The first looks at each standing committee in the House and Senate—as well as every special, select, and joint committee—by Congress number and provides information on:

  • Membership rosters—including party affiliations, committee leadership, and departures
  • Two sets of committee jurisdictions—1993 and 2010
  • Brief organizational history of each committee, along with information on its leadership, long-serving and prominent members, and legislative updates

The second lists every member of the 103rd–111th Congresses, 1993–2010, and provides:

  • biographical data—birth and death dates as well as dates of service
  • committee assignments, including seniority, ranking status, and chairmanships
  • departure circumstances

Committees in the U.S. Congress 1993–2010 also includes an overview essay on the committee system, and a select bibliography.

Academic and government libraries will want to add this volume to their collection to support researchers looking for in-depth information on congressional committees, the workhorses of the national legislature.
