Today’s international studies students need more than an overview of traditional academic disciplines—and more than oversimplified descriptions of global problems—to prepare for an increasingly globalized world. Chernotsky and Hobbs’ new introductory text Crossing Borders offers a clear, compelling framework for understanding the global forces that both unite and separate world citizens. With smart features designed to promote critical thinking, the book invites students to envision the future roles they might play on the
international stage and guides them in developing the intercultural competencies they need to get there.
Looking at types of “borders”—geographical, political, economic, social, and cultural—and then delving into extended case study chapters to explore the specific challenges they pose, the authors help students see how these borders contribute to our understanding of the world. What do these borders consist of? How and by whom are they maintained? How may they be crossed, and with what consequences? A set of chapters also moves “beyond borders” to explore topics that are inherently cross-cutting: global governance and cooperation, poverty and disease, human rights, and more. The book’s final chapter looks at where students are going in terms of careers, offering practical advice on exchange programs, service learning, internships, and future jobs. It also asks them to calibrate their internal compasses: what are the principles that will guide their actions? What is their vision of a globalized world in the 21st century?
Chernotsky and Hobbs bring their curricular experience in the international studies community to bear on the book’s many pedagogical features that include:
- “How Do You Connect?” boxes that ask questions and offer ideas about participation in civil society: What organizations are you a member of? Do you buy counterfeit goods? Have you participated in political or social movements?
- “Where Do You Stand?” boxes that outline controversies and invite students to take a well-reasoned position on a global issue;
- “So What?” boxes that showcase interviews with current and former international studies students from the U.S. as well as India, Turkey, and elsewhere, reflecting on their experiences;
- "In Their Own Words" callouts showcase quotes from important historical and contemporary figures, giving students a feel for their unique voice and perspective on important topics;
- Maps, photos, tables, figures, chapter summaries, marginal glossary, and resources for further study.
