Dogmas and Dreams: A Reader in Modern Political Ideologies, 3rd Edition Nancy S. Love, Pennsylvania State University Editor
Ideologies legitimize politics, outline basic values, socialize individuals, facilitate communication, and mobilize people—in short, their study makes for a great entrée into the study of political theory and the discipline of political science. A source both of stability and instability, concord and conflict, the ideologies explored in this anthology show the dynamics of politics through the study of ideas. With 18 of 49 selections new to this edition, Dogmas and Dreams signals a renewed emphasis on political ideologies showing how public discourse—for better or for worse—reflects the complexity and chaos of an increasingly global world. With Nancy Love’s concise and insightful introductions, original selections by influential thinkers challenge students to question their political convictions and thus discover and explore their own political beliefs.
New to the third edition: - Updated selections convey the continuing evolution of traditional right/left ideologies of liberalism and conservatism, as well as socialism and fascism.
- Expanded sections on feminism and environmentalism illustrate the role of ideologies beyond left and right in transforming mainstream politics.
- A new section on nationalism and globalization addresses the continued importance of political ideology post-9/11, including multiple perspectives on new fundamentalisms, with selections from Edward Said, Sulayman Nyang, Samuel Huntington,Benjamin Barber, and Fred Dallmayr.

Reviews “Dogmas and Dreams presents a terrific collection of readings in political ideologies, balancing classic texts with contemporary ones. Nancy Love's introductory comments are lucid and thought-provoking. One of the great strengths of the book is that it includes sustained selections that are long enough to do justice to the complexity of the political writings. The new section on nationalism and globalization makes the text indispensable for students' engagement with ideological dilemmas of the 21st century.” - Leonard C. Feldman, University of Oregon"With this expanded, updated version of Dogmas and Dreams, Nancy S. Love offers a more comprehensive and current selection of readings in modern political ideology. The book's broad array of articles has now been supplemented with crucial writings that reflect on the globalizing context in which modern political life operates, addressing such topics as the global food supply, terrorism, and Islamic fundamentalism.
These additions further enhance an already invaluable teaching tool, which I find indispensable for the classroom.”
- Mary Caputi, California State University, Long Beach“In Dogmas and Dreams, Nancy Love provides a first-rate road map through the major political ideologies of the modern era. With this map in hand, students will gain an excellent understanding of the origins of modern institutions, the values of liberalism and its multiple critics, and be able to develop their own political stance. This third edition has welcomed argumentations to the classical authors, Locke, Marx, and Hitler, among others, with selections from distinguished contemporary writers, such as Shiva, Said, and Barber.” - Ruth Turner, Hanover College
