Mass Media and American Politics, 8th Edition
Doris A. Graber, University of Illinois at Chicago

Click here to preview chapter 1.

The eighth edition of Graber’s classic text is thoroughly updated to reflect major structural changes that have shaken the world of political news. Graber combines comprehensive coverage and cutting-edge theory as she shows students how the media influence governmental institutions and functions, and in turn how the government shapes the way the media disseminate information. Her broad coverage has three focal points: the media’s role in both the public and private sectors; its impact on the attitudes of ordinary Americans and political elites; and the ways in which the news media cover government and politics.

In addition to new photos, cartoons, screen shots, and data, this edition includes:

  • major changes in reporting, notably in the 2008 elections, brought about by the Internet;
  • the subsequent erosion of the mainstream media’s influence on the political agenda;
  • new media, including more on blogging, social networking, and political entertainment shows;
  • the latest on media laws and recent court cases;
  • the evolution and current state of war-time reporting;
  • and how the FCC regulates media ownership and content.

Testimonials
Mass Media and American Politics is the most comprehensive textbook on the subject matter available. It is thick with substance, and I would highly recommend its use. It has by far more nuts and bolts about the mass media system than any other text I have examined, and good coverage of the research being done in the area as well. - Audrey Haynes, University of Georgia

Doris Graber’s Mass Media and American Politics has provided excellent structure to my undergraduate Media and Politics course. It introduces students to the key political actors and institutions shaping our national media as well as summarizes, in a very accessibly way, the latest research on media and politics in the fields of political science, communications, psychology, and journalism. Graber introduces students to a wide range of concepts and theories about the news media and their effects, which helps students deconstruct and critically assess the information and images they see and hear in the media, rather than simply accepting them as a reflection of reality. - Laurel Elder, Hartwick College

I found this book extremely thorough and insightful with regard to a rapidly changing political, and more critically, economic environment for the media in all their forms. The endnotes and other references give students somewhere to begin when focusing on a specific topic for a term paper. - Roger Handberg, University of Central Florida
