The Middle East, 12th Edition Ellen Lust, Yale University Editor
Now in its twelfth edition, The Middle East continues to be the most comprehensive, balanced introduction to the region. This long trusted and time-tested resource has not only been updated for currency, but the scope of the book has also been thoughtfully modified to capture a more complex and complete picture of the Middle East. Its new editor, Ellen Lust, has gathered an outstanding group of scholars to bring important revisions to this edition: • new chapters on political economy, domestic and regional politics, and international relations have been added to the overview section; • new organization of the country profiles mirrors the topics covered in the overview section, making them more thorough, consistent, and easier to teach; • new profiles feature the North African countries of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia; • thorough updates on the latest events in the region, including election results from Iran and other countries, current immigration trends, developments in peace negotiations between Arab and Israeli leaders, as well as changes in diplomatic relations; and • more maps, tables, and figures show political and demographic data. Both students and instructors will appreciate the new online ancillaries that accompany this edition: a dynamic, interactive chronology of major events, a wealth of key documents, and lists of resources for further study. All of the maps, tables, and figures are available for download as well.

Reviews "Highly recommended. All academic and general reference collections; lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; general readers." - Choice"Every major public library ought to consider acquiring a copy of this book for its reference collection. In view of the region's importance in world politics, economics, modern history, and comparative theology, most university libraries ought to consider it too.... Strongly recommended." - Reference Reviews (UK)
Testimonials This superb reference work for graduate students and undergraduate majors in Middle East studies could be assigned reading for courses in modern history, comparative politics, or international relations. The quality of the thematic and country essays is uniformly high, presenting the entire set of countries of the Middle East and North Africa as well as timely perspectives on regional rivalries, political economy, governance, civil society, and social change. - Clement M. Henry, Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin
The Middle East has been a godsend for anyone who believes that study of the Middle East must be based on data and an understanding of the history of the area. My students consistently reported that it was a valuable resource. The new format of the twelfth edition promises a rich set of analytical chapters crafted by respected scholars. The importance of this new edition is that it avoids the clichés and polarization that too often distort understanding the complex issues which this region faces. I recommend The Middle East as a fair, comprehensive study of diverse and complicated states. - Donna Lee Bowen, Department of Political Science, Brigham Young University
A substantially updated classic, The Middle East belongs on the shelf of anyone in search of a rich understanding of the region as a whole. The book combines meticulous attention to history with an analysis of the present. Engagingly written and beautifully organized, it offers an overview on trends and debates taking place in the Middle East—an invaluable contribution. - Mounira M. Charrad, Department of Sociology, University of Texas at Austin
