Public Opinion: Democratic Ideals, Democratic Practice, 2nd Edition
Rosalee A. Clawson, Purdue University
Zoe M. Oxley, Union College

In this revision to their lauded core text, Clawson and Oxley continue to link the enduring normative questions of democratic theory to existing empirical research on public opinion. Exploring the tension between ideals and their practice, each chapter focuses on exemplary studies so students gain a richer understanding of the research process and see methods applied in context.

This second edition features:

  • a brand-new chapter on the critical role of social groups in shaping public opinion;
  • the most recent polling data fully incorporated in to discussion and all of the tables and figures;
  • new scholarship, especially in areas which have seen significant progress, such as genetics and public opinion; and
  • recent developments in U.S. politics, such as evaluations of President Obama, the economic recession and attempts at recovery, the power of new media, the rise of the Tea Party movement, and more.
