Table of Contents Part I. Approaches to the Presidency Part III. Presidential Selection Part IV. Presidents and Politics Part V. Presidents and Government Testimonials " The Presidency and the Political System combines a diverse set of sophisticated scholarly perspectives on the presidency with a current and accessible presentation. The selections challenge students to evaluate the presidency through political science theory and data, and the authors' in-depth assessments of recent presidential politics provide an excellent basis for class discussion. In my view, it's the best presidency reader on the market. - Scott Meinke, Bucknell UniversityI like Professor Nelson's book because it moves students to a higher level of abstraction in their thinking about the American presidency. I feel that such a transition is especially important at a time when the politics-of-personality potentially obscures the instiutional- and, hence, enduring- aspect of this office. - Liza Benham, Northern Kentucky University I have used the Nelson reader for ten years now. It is a staple of my upper-division undergraduate presidency course. I like it especially because it incorporates articles of central importance when it comes to teaching the presidency. It moves beyond the general nature of the standard textbook and exposes students to important scholarship on this institution, in many cases abbreviated versions of very important books. The chapters are accessible to undergraduates, while still deep enough to prompt interesting and vigorous class discussion. - David Crockett, Trinity University Bio(s)
