The topics covered are timely, relevant, and of interest to the students. I like that practitioners authored most of the entries: their practical, real world experiences force both the students and me to address the disparities between principle and practice. Also, it challenges students to synthesize material from several chapters to understand the complexities of the real world examples, promoting more analytical and thoughtful discussion than readings I’ve used in the past. An added bonus to using the book is that it educates students about the kinds of careers available in state and local government." - Mitzi Mahoney, Sam Houston State University“Our students are required to take Texas Government, and this book is a wonderful way to get our students to see beyond the borders of Texas. Since some of the articles include Texas, the book does double-duty in highlighting what other political writers think of Texas and its place in the union. The articles are concise and cover a wide variety of topics; many can even be used outside of the table of contents designation. These articles can be used to supplement many general state and local government books, as well as the books that are unique to Texas Government.” - Eric Miller, Blinn College-Bryan Campus“Kevin Smith’s State and Local Government is a valuable supplement to the teaching of state and local government. It gives students the opportunity to examine issues of importance in government and politics with contemporary and relevant articles.” - Gary Uhrin, Westmoreland County Community CollegeBio(s)
